What is veterinary compounding?

Veterinary compounding is the preparation of a custom medication for an individual animal, made to a veterinarian's prescription when a commercial product does not fit. Animals are not small humans, and one manufactured strength or format rarely suits a cat, a Great Dane, a parrot, and a horse equally. Compounding closes that gap.

In practice, that means turning a bitter tablet into a flavoured liquid or treat, preparing a transdermal gel you rub inside a cat's ear instead of forcing a pill, sizing a dose down safely for a budgie or a gecko, or remaking a medication that has been discontinued. Every preparation is made on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
